SmartPacker TwinTube: a win/win for bag making

Small confectionery bags formed at twice the speed in half the space

Confectionery packing specialist CFS has launched a high-speed bagging system, SmartPacker TwinTube, which synchronises two forming tubes in a single machine. For the first time, this combines speed, flexibility and space-efficiency in a way that will allow manufacturers to maximise the potential of the small-bag and seasonal markets.

300 packs per minute
The SmartPacker TwinTube operates parallel forming tubes from a single drive, and can achieve combined speeds of 300 packs per minute on 10g bags. Says Frank Caris, Manager of the Business Unit Confectionery: "Many confectionery manufacturers still have traditional lines running at speeds of 80 to 100 bags a minute. In this case, they can replace up to three machines with a single SmartPacker TwinTube and see a swift return on investment."

Brand miniaturisation
The TwinTube system hits its highest efficiency when forming small bags in the 10g to 60g range. The many manufacturers running dedicated lines in this size range, whether for Halloween, party mixes or simply to feed the increasing trend towards brand miniaturisation, will especially appreciate this capability. But with bag width spanning the 40mm to 120mm range, manufacturers can also produce 100 g bags.

Two different products at the same time
The software which controls the multihead weigher feeding the bagger can be pre-programmed to allow split operation, with the two tubes handling completely different product, if required.

Big cost- and space savings
Manufacturers running multiple lines for small bags can save the costs associated with additional operators and a greater maintenance burden. Where limited factory floor space is an issue, the SmartPacker TwinTube option can leave room for other processing or packaging equipment. "As the industry consolidates, and manufacturers integrate their production on fewer sites, productivity per square metre becomes ever-more significant," Caris emphasises. At the same time, investment is considerably lower than for two 150 bag-per-minute lines, with lower cost of ownership and lower costs per bag.

Key features A single reel of film is cut on the machine, with the two resulting webs then feeding up to the corresponding tubes. Servo drives are used to operate the sealing and the film transport, which is managed by the reciprocating jaw movement. Says Caris: "It's a tried and trusted way of transporting the film, with little risk of slippage. We like to think that we have combined a traditional concept with efficient, modern technology." Other key features include: two coders mounted in the film track, and easily accessible from both sides of the machine; a single tooling unit for quick and easy switching of the the bag-forming sets; and a full colour touch screen from which the bagger and weigher can be controlled. The bagger's 1500mm build height - exceptionally low for this type of machine - allows even large multihead weighers to be accommodated in the factory space available. Pack format options include hanging holes in the top seal and chain bags.
